A suggested standardized format for cosmic ray ground-level event data

A standardized format is suggested for the archival storage and exchange of neutron monitor data obtained during solar flare initiated ground level cosmic ray events. Using the data for the 7 May 1978 ground level event, a format has been developed that incorporates hourly data preceding and following the event and small time interval data immediately before and during the event. Provision has been made for the inclusion of uncorrected and corrected data as well as the atmospheric pressure. The cosmic ray intensity data are then reduced to a standard counting rate of counts per second facilitating the graphing and comparison of these data for various analyses

Attitudes toward Marriage, Divorce, Cohabitation, and Casual Sex among Working-Age Latinos: Does Religion Matter?

The rapid growth of the Latino population in the United States has renewed interest in Latino family research. It has often been assumed that Catholicism is a key factor influencing Latinos’ attitudes toward the family, despite the fact that nearly one third of Latinos are not Catholic. This article uses data from the 2006 National Survey of Religion and Family Life, a survey of working-age adults (aged 18-59 years) in the lower 48 states, to explore the relationship between multiple dimensions of religiosity—denomination, church attendance, prayer, and beliefs about the Bible—and Latinos’ attitudes regarding marriage, divorce, cohabitation, and casual sex. Compared with Catholics, evangelical Protestants tend to hold more conservative attitudes on family-related issues. Latinos who attend services regularly and pray frequently also report more traditional views. Findings involving literalist views of the Bible are more equivocal. Taken together, religious variables are just as potent as socioeconomic and demographic factors in explaining individual-level variation in Latinos’ attitudes. Study limitations are noted, and several directions for future research are identified

Religion and Attitudes toward Same-Sex Marriage among U.S. Latinos

Objectives. This study examines links between multiple aspects of religious involvement and attitudes toward same-sex marriage among U.S. Latinos. The primary focus is on variations by affiliation and participation, but the possible mediating roles of biblical beliefs, clergy cues, and the role of religion in shaping political views are also considered. Methods. We use binary logistic regression models to analyze data from a large nationwide sample of U.S. Latinos conducted by the Pew Hispanic Forum in late 2006. Results. Findings highlight the strong opposition to same-sex marriage among Latino evangelical (or conservative) Protestants and members of sectarian groups (e.g., LDS), even compared with devout Catholics. Although each of the hypothesized mediators is significantly linked with attitudes toward same-sex marriage, for the most part controlling for them does not alter the massive affiliation/attendance differences in attitudes toward same-sex marriage. Conclusions. This study illustrates the importance of religious cleavages in public opinion on social issues within the diverse U.S. Latino population. The significance of religious variations in Hispanic civic life is likely to increase with the growth of the Latino population and the rising numbers of Protestants and sectarians among Latinos

At the second phase of THE SPHINX PROJECT, a hybrid TLC-PAIR METER was designed for measuring high energy neutrino sources (E upsilon * TeV), searching high energy muon sources (E mu TeV) and measuring muon group (E mu 1 TeV). The principle of PAIR METER has been already proposed. In this TLC-PAIR METER, electromagnetic shower induced by cosmic ray muons are detected using TL (Thermoluminescence) sheets with position counters

Two Phase Collective Modes in Josephson Vortex Lattice in Intrinsic Josephson Junction Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta}

Josephson plasma excitations in the high $T_c$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ have been investigated in a wide microwave frequency region (9.8 -- 75 GHz), in particular, in magnetic field applied parallel to the $ab$ plane of the single crystal. In sharp contrast to the case for magnetic fields parallel to the c axis or tilted from the $ab$ plane, it was found that there are two kinds of resonance modes, which are split in energy and possess two distinctly different magnetic field dependences. One always lies higher in energy than the other and has a shallow minimum at about 0.8 kOe, then increases linearly with magnetic field. On the other hand, another mode begins to appear only in a magnetic field (from a few kOe and higher) and has a weakly decreasing tendency with increasing magnetic field. By comparing with a recent theoretical model the higher energy mode can naturally be attributed to the Josephson plasma resonance mode propagating along the primitive reciprocal lattice vector of the Josephson vortex lattice, whereas the lower frequency mode is assigned to the novel phase collective mode of the Josephson vortex lattice, which has never been observed before.Comment: 11 pages and 10 figure

Continuous research has come to show that the audiences of mass communications are "selective" in their use of information. And that mass communicators have usually failed in trying to convert people of different beliefs, political or otherwise, to their side.
